At Tai Expeditions, we dedicate ourselves to offering truly memorable adventures while upholding a positive environmental, social, and economic impact on the people and places we visit.

Our Mission

Our mission is to promote the diversity of the East African Great Lakes region, with a particular emphasis on Uganda. We envision a world where travelers from all walks of life can immerse themselves in the rich cultures, awe-inspiring landscapes, and diverse wildlife of this remarkable region. Through our commitment to social inclusiveness, sustainable development, and environmental conservation, we aim to become a leader in the travel industry, leaving a positive and lasting impact on the destinations we explore and the lives we touch.

  5. Transparency & Continuous Improvement: We monitor, evaluate, and report annually on our progress.

Our Commitments

1. Sustainability Management

  • Appoint a dedicated Sustainability Coordinator to oversee the implementation and monitoring of sustainability initiatives.
  • Maintain a written sustainability policy accessible to staff, guests, and partners.
  • Conduct annual sustainability audits and publish an annual sustainability report.
  • Integrate sustainability KPIs into staff performance reviews.
  • Ensure company’s transparency in sustainability by public reporting and communicating
  • Comply with all relevant Ugandan and international laws and regulations.

2. Internal Operations

  • Energy & Water: Reduce office energy and water consumption by 10% by June 2028 through efficiency measures.
  • Waste: Achieve zero single-use plastics in operations by 2028 and ensure 100% recycling of paper, batteries, and cartridges.
  • Staff Wellbeing: Ensure fair contracts, living wages, health & safety compliance, and annual wellbeing assessments.
  • Training: Provide all staff with sustainability and responsible tourism training, updated annually.

3. Supply Chain & Partnerships

  • Work only with accommodations, transport providers, and suppliers that commit to sustainable practices (water/energy saving, waste reduction, fair labor, biodiversity protection).
  • Include sustainability clauses in all contracts.
  • Prioritize suppliers with Travelife, Fair Trade Tourism (FTT) or GSTC-recognized certification.
  • Conduct partner evaluations and provide training/support where needed.
  • Have a zero-tolerance policy toward child exploitation and abuse. In line with Ugandan law and international standards, we are committed to responsible tourism that protects children’s rights and wellbeing. Through this commitment, we ensure that our operations, staff, partners, and travelers contribute to responsible tourism that safeguards the rights and wellbeing of children.

4. Transport

  • Utilize fuel-efficient, well-maintained vehicles that meet national emission standards.
  • Reduce safari fleet fuel consumption by 5% by 2026 through route optimization and shared transfers.
  • Explore alternative low-carbon mobility options (EV pilot projects, solar boats) by 2028.
  • Encourage guests to offset carbon emissions and support verified carbon projects.
  • Considering and giving preference to more sustainable alternatives when selecting transport options for transfers and excursions in the destination, taking into account price, comfort, and practical considerations;

5. Accommodations

  • Prioritize partnerships with eco-lodges and locally owned accommodations.
  • Ensure that 80% of contracted properties by June 2028 have documented sustainability programs (energy, water, waste, biodiversity, child protection).
  • Support partner lodges in obtaining Travelife, Fair Trade Tourism (FTT) or national eco-certification.
  • Encourage accommodations to fill in the sustainability questionnaire to gain insight in their practises;
  • Clearly and actively communicate our sustainability objectives and requirements regarding accommodations to contracted and other relevant accommodations;
  • Include standard sustainability clauses in all contracts with accommodation providers that focus on child labour, anti-corruption and bribery, waste management and protection of biodiversity;
  • Work with accommodations and restaurants that incorporate elements of local art, architecture, or cultural heritage; while respecting the intellectual property rights of local communities;
  • Terminate cooperation with accommodation in case of clear evidence that contracted accommodations jeopardize the provision of integrity of basic services such as food, water, energy, healthcare, or soil to the neighbouring companies

6. Excursions & Activities

  • Avoid all excursions that exploit humans, wildlife, or ecosystems.
  • Prohibit captive wildlife experiences (except in recognized rescue centers or conservation facilities).
  • Promote low-impact, high-value experiences (walking safaris, birding, cycling, and community-led tours).
  • Educate guests about the importance of cultural respect, biodiversity protection, and responsible photography practices.
  • Communicate our sustainability objectives and requirements to contracted and other relevant excursion providers by distributing this information via code of conducts, representative agents, social media, email, discussions, and/or meetings, to minimise negative visitor impact and maximise enjoyment;

7. Community & Cultural Impact

  • Ensure at least 30% of safari spending benefits local businesses and communities.
  • Create 30 new direct and indirect local jobs by 2027.
  • Support at least three community-led development projects per year.
  • Collaborate with cultural institutions to safeguard heritage and expand authentic cultural experiences.
  • Work with local tour leaders, local representatives, local tour guides, porters, drivers, cooks, and other local staff in case of equal ability, and provide training as required.
  • Have our tour leaders, local representatives and guides inform clients on relevant sustainability matters in the destination (e.g. protection of flora, fauna, and cultural heritage, resource use), social norms and values (e.g. tips, dressing code and photography) and human rights (e.g. sexual exploitation).
  • Train our employed tour leaders and local representatives on the avoidance of sexual exploitation of children.

8. Destinations & Conservation

  • Partner with conservation NGOs and national parks to protect wildlife and landscapes.
  • Support three biodiversity conservation projects annually (reforestation, anti-poaching, wetlands restoration).
  • Avoid destinations under overtourism stress by limiting group sizes to a maximum 12 travelers.
  • Not promote souvenirs which contain threatened flora and fauna species as indicated in the CITES treaty and the IUCN ‘Red List’; or historic and archaeological artefacts (except as permitted by law);

9. Client Communication & Protection

  • Provide pre-trip sustainability guidelines/ codes of conduct covering cultural etiquette, responsible wildlife viewing, and eco-friendly practices.
  • Offer sustainable product options and highlight certified accommodations/activities.
  • Ensure that no marketing and advertisement document, statement, or other publication shall contain misleading information, over-advertise, or under-deliver. We guarantee that all our staff are aware of and ensure that what is offered can be delivered to our clients with ease.
  • Provide customers with information about commercial, sexual or any other form of exploitation and harassment, particularly of children and adolescents;
  • Protect client data privacy and ensure accurate, transparent marketing.
  • Have clear emergency response and child protection protocols in place.

Monitoring & Transparency

  • Track and report annually on carbon emissions, water use, waste, community investments, and guest satisfaction.
  • Set measurable targets (environmental, social, economic) with annual reviews.
  • Publish sustainability reports and share results with stakeholders and clients.

Review & Accountability

The team will review and update this policy annually and every three years, with the next update in 2028. All employees, partners, and stakeholders are responsible for upholding its principles.
